How do you define Social Networking?

Posted by robe0284 on February 6th, 2008 and filed under FAQ, Online Social Networking

Many people are familiar with MySpace and Facebook, networking sites designed for making friends, or LinkedIn designed for arranging business contacts. What other types of online networking do we consider social networking? Is a course blog or threaded discussion networking? Is a listserv networking? How about tagging?

What is social? and What is networking? in terms of cyberspace?

Here’s a definition, or THE definition perhaps? - a rather long one ;)

    George,

We are aware of dana boyd’s definition. What is YOUR definition? How do YOU define social networking? Does threaded discussion count? Does a course blog count? Or does the advent of MySpace and FaceBook created something new in communiction?

Seems to me that the property of being a social network is a matter of degree, because sociality and networking are matters of degree. So things like threaded discussions, even used for limited purposes, do count as social networks, even if of a minimal sort.
